Blogger Frustration!

I've had it with blogger. 1/2 the time the site is down, the other 1/2 of the time, like today, certain aspects of the site aren't working (I can't seem to upload pictures this morning). Additonally, the site continues to mess with my template and generally annoy me.
I'm in the process of moving my site to WordPress. I hired a great friend to help with the redesign... in the meantime I'm just gonna haul everything over there and use one of their templates. Anything is better than this at this point....

It's been a while since I've had an absolute favorite something. A while back it was sneakers... I had this pair of black and silver Nike's that I found at a sample sale in NY. They were totally odd and all of my friends hated them- but I literally found an excuse to wear them to every occasion. They saw everything from the inside of Cheetah to the beaches on the Cape. I loved them. Unfortunately they encountered an inconceivably large pile of dog-doo as I raced home to get my first year grades in law school and had to be discarded. In college I had this one grey t-shirt that I wore everywhere. It was one of the few things that survived the abercrombie purge of 1999 (thanks to Smitty and Rob's intervention). Alas... one day it went "missing" never to be seen again (my friends smiled smugly to each other when I conceded the loss).
Yes... there have been jackets, t-shirts, jeans and shoes in the past... but nothing I've reached for on a consistent basis recently... until Naketano.

Every December is a frenzy of parties, gift buying and stress. Not that I don't love the holidays... its just that sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming. One of the most stressful endeavors? My world has been oscillating between crime and couture over the past few weeks... random combination, I know. I feel very schizophrenic about the whole thing. You know, the whole "so much beauty and so much misery in the world" diatribe... I'll spare you that for now.
Times like this remind me of New York, because everything moved so fast and I was constantly confronted with dichotomies. The filming of a movie with multi-millionaire actors and actresses running around Hudson street while the homeless mother watched from her spot on the subway stairs.
Its not wonder that couture based in and on this crazy city also has multiple personalities.

New York Couture combines a little bit of class, a little bit of spunk, and a whole lot of style in its unique collection. What do you do when you're an angry kid from Cambridge Massachusetts... seething in your Northface, itching to start a revolution? You make tee shirts of course!
In a place where even the color red is bullied (Crimson has that place on lock)- the people at Proletariat (sorry blogger wouldn't let me switch the letters around like their defiant logo) are making a statement. My favorite design is the salesman hoody. I like it (1) because its just a cool idea. Its like, "that's a cool hoody" and then all of sudden BAM you flash your complementer with the inside as if to say "you only know the half of it." I also like it (2) because its all "power to the people fist in the air, I hustle to get mine" and it costs $65. Not that $65 for a hoody is unreasonable... actually that's pretty inexpensive. I just like the fact that the creators are working their hustle in order to help you symbolically demonstrate the fact that you work yours.
You have forgive the image (its a little cut and paste... I'm sure the creators are too busy plotting and scheming to worry about proper display), but you have to admit the concept behind this hoody is pretty damn cool.

Time to get a new watch! (Ah memories of 3rd grade come flooding back with that one). In all seriousness, if you're in the market for a new watch or if you're looking for a distinctly modern gift, Nooka is the place to go.

Nooka is the brainchild of artist and designer, Matthew Waldman. in 1997, Matthew had a flash-back to a first grade math class while staring at a large wall clock in a London hotel and was struck by how few options there were for time display. He then sketched his ideas for potential designs on a napkin and brought them back to New York. After working on the designs, he submitted them to his legal team, and indeed, they were unique enough to patent!

Maps

I love Boston, don't get me wrong... but there are certain things I miss about New York. The fashion, the night life, and yes... the subway. It was so... orderly. The numbered and lettered cars, the grid-like system, the fact that I could ride the subway from Harlem to Coney Island on a whim... it was great. NYC SubwayLine is the officially licensed brand of NY's MTA... as such one would expect ill fitting sweat shirts, boring tee's and quite possibly fanny packs. Not so! Their stuff is so hot. I love that whole beautiful/ industrial thing.
I'm a big fan of the wallet and wristlet and love the map tees.

Speaking of maps, if you're a writer or are looking for a gift for a writer this holiday season, Maps of the Imagination: The Writer As A Cartogrpaher is a wonderfully inspiring book. One of my all time favorites!

Lastly, since I'm on the whole maps/ subway thing, be sure to stop by "Overheard in New York" for a few good laughs. The things people say and do in public never ceases to amaze me.

Bag Intervention

My boyfriend has recetnly suggested having something along the lines of a "bag intervention." This happened when we attempted to merge our belongings into one closet and my shelf of purses overflowed onto his collection of shoes on the floor (they always say women have a shoe thing... but men can be kinda crazy with their sneakers).
"How many black purses do you need!?" he asked. I tried to explain that they were all different sizes, shapes, and levels of dress, but he continued to roll his eyes.
Its my personal opinion that you can never have too many purses. Sandy Blaine, of La Vie Devant Soie, would likely agree...

I have to say, sometimes I'm a bit jealous of the person writing my life.
Let me back up...
When I step back and view my life from an outside perspective, I often get the sense its the product of some wild imagination, not my own. Things tend to fall into place, build tension, and create drama in the way that so many great stories do. I sit at my computer late at night (or early morning, which you've seen) and clear my head in the hopes of writing that perfect first line of my great American novel. Alas, my real life always gets in the way- my after-thoughts become daydreams and before I know it I'm lost. Whomever is writing my life not only has a great sense of drama, but a wild sense of humor as well.
In case you didn't know, November is National Novel Writing Month. I realize I'm writing this a week behind, but you can still sign up on the site . . . a perfect place to stop for your daily dose of inspiration. . . if its not already right in front of you.

Sweet Pecan Pie

Atlanta's Design Museum is currently showcasing an exhibition entitled: 'To a T' T-shirt Culture... Cute or Couture? With brands like Atlanta-based Pecan Pie Couture in the mix, I'd say the answer is a little bit of both.

Pecan Pie Couture is truly a southern belle- one who's not afraid to roll up her sleeves and roll out the dough. A little bit tacky, a little bit sassy and unmistakably Southern, Pecan Pie's graphic stenciled and hand -embroidered t-shirts are the perfect combination of big-city opulence and small town civility.

The designs are fresh, fun and kind of remind me of a southern version of Johnny Cupcakes! Clothes:
With a mix of playful designs and playful designers, postlapsaria caught my eye weeks ago and has been a favorite destination ever since. Postlapsaria not only has some of the cutest designs around, they're extremely comfortable and versatile-- there's no stiff couture here!

Of interest:
I don't know if you've heard, but Aron Ranen's "Black Hair" DVD is generating a lot of interest lately. Instead of expressing my opinion on the matter (it would go on for pages)- I'll leave it to you to form your own. A free preview of the DVD is available on his website!

Fits to a tee

I'll say for the record I don't have a strong opinion about Tiger one way or the other. However, I do think he broke down some pretty substantial barriers and I definitely appreciate what he's done in that respect. My boyfriend and I golf at Franklin Park Golf Course here in Boston. In the 1940s and 1950s, when most of the golf courses around the country were segregated, people of all ethnic groups were welcome at Franklin Park. Before Franklin Park, I had the distinct pleasure of golfing on Fisher's Island as well... there not only I was I on-staff (and therefore allowed to make use of the private course), I was the only person of color on the entire island at one point! Needless to say Franklin Park was a welcome change- and there's nothing like going for a round of golf and seeing a kid with corn rows make par.
Now, I'm not suggesting that just because the game of golf has become more diverse that the attired needs to change. I'm actually a huge fan of pink polo and light blue pants (I know like 1/2 of my friends who are reading this are rolling their eyes and laughing right now)- anyway for those who want their golf attire to have a bit more style- Urban Golf Gear is the place to go. More than an athletic brand, its a lifestyle brand. The logo is gorgeous and they have everything from t-shirts to Polos.

Craig Tanner, Chief Urban Officer, was inspired to create Urban Golf Gear after watching Tiger Woods win his third amateur golf title. "When I watched Tiger and Steve Scott compete, they were dressed like old men. I thought their apparel could be spiced up."

I know it may be a bit late in the season to be pushing golf gear-- but for those of you lucky enough to live in warmer climates, golf is never out of season. For those of you like me who have already had to turn on the heat- rest assured that great style will always be in season.

Very Wells

Too often I have found myself focused on one or the other: the past or the future.
When I started college I was preoccupied by the past- I felt the strings and standards of my small home town holding me back- and it wasn't until my junior year that I really came into my own. Once I graduated all I could think about was the future. How was I going to make tons of money so I could keep up with my friends. I forgot what made me happy and instead focused on what I believed to be the "big picture" and ultimately got lost.
It wasn't until law school that everything came together. I no longer resented the small-town aspects of my past and learned that they were an invaluable part of my character- I also became less "future" oriented and focused on the present- changing my thought process from "what will make me rich so I can be happy later" to "what makes me happy now."
Working in public interest law is about the last thing in the world I ever thought I'd end up doing. . . but for the first time I think I've found a balance between the past and present that works for me- more than money, and more than dwelling on past issues, I find its most important to be happy today- I think once present happiness is established, there's room for everything else to fall into place.
Another young woman inspired by the past and future is Ms. Laurel Wells. She combines both modern and vintage elements in her truly inspiring collections. Each piece is beautiful. . . and (lucky us!) she has recently opened an on-line shop. I looooove her bow-tie dress and was sad to see her seafoam cotton velvet skirt has already sold out! Whenever I get overwhelmed I get flighty. "Mad flighty" as my brother would say. The inbox starts to pile up, the stack of unopened mail spills onto the floor, and my phone recycles voice mail messages before I get a chance to listen to them.
So in some ways its kind of ridiculous that I keep up with this site, above all other things. I guess in some ways this keeps me grounded. Like no matter how nuts things get, there's always art. There are always people creating gorgeous things and throwing themselves behind a dream.
Take for instance Rebe. A mother/ daughter team creating lovely designs way out there on the West Coast. Debra and Hillery combine classic silhouettes with eclectic fabrics and embellishments to create a truly unique look. Wear the look alone, or pair with a conservative suit (something some of us have to wear every day) to give your work attire a little spice.

. . . That's what I said every morning for weeks this summer as I approached my car covered in bird turds. My landlord assigned me spot lucky #13 which was directly under the biggest tree in the neighboring apartment complex. The guys at the car wash knew me well- I was going every three days until I couldn't afford it anymore (studying and not working kills a budget). . . and once at Stop and Shop an old woman approached me and said, "Oh... its bird doo... I thought you had put camouflage paint on your car! ha ha ha! you should get that taken care of." Not only was the episode entirely embarrassing, but it led me to wonder what kind of camouflage she thought I was trying to achieve, my car being red and all. . .
Anyway, My favorite grumpy t-shirt designer has come up with the perfect solution. The Grumpy Girl Auto Bird Turd Emergency Kit. Genius if you ask me.
She also has great t-shirts including the "organized mess" shirt which I'm fixing to order right now (just because my desk is covered in law journals, Star magazine, and sketches doesn't mean its not organized!!)
And yes I said "fixing to order."

Straight smokin, tokin'

The best thing, I think, is inadvertent, unexpected inspiration. It can come in various forms . . . a job, a conversation, a gaze across the bar. . . whatever. It can make the most frustrating times bearable. Now I'm not necessarily saying I'm going through a frustrating time-- though like most people I certainly have frustrating aspects of my life-- but I will say I have experienced that warm fuzzy feeling that comes from unexpected inspiration. Its the kind that makes you want to write, or that at least allows you to see the world as a story unfolding-- complete with all the little details . . . like the color of someones eyes or the ability to not only see injustice, but feel it to the core your being.
It seems like I've been wandering along too long looking for it-- forcing myself to search for it in old books, old conversations, and old endeavors. Its like the minute I stopped looking, BAM there it was.
Anyway, on a completely different note, but maybe a bit like inadvertent inspiration, I'm loving toke's "hot rocks" t-shirt. Maybe because it captures something dynamic in its simplicity. Maybe because it, like the other t-shirts on tokeworld, are super cute and remind me of a Saturday afternoon. Or maybe, like inadvertent inspiration, it just works.

Just Peachy

The other day I was at work and a co-worker reminded me of my love for hip-hop. Not that I really needed to be reminded-- (and not the stuff they're playing on the radio now. Seriously? That song by Jibbs may be the saddest thing I've ever heard.) Anyway, I could go on and on about the lack of creativity, the horrible messages the music is sending, or... had you been really unlucky I could make my modern day hip-hop / crack analogy. But I'll hold off for now.
The point of this is, the conversation reminded me of one of favorite websites, The Giant Peach. Not only do they have the best music (The Coup, Zion I, and Dead Prez to name a few) they have great clothes- hard to find t-shirts, great indie designers like Gentle Fawn, Heavy Rotation, and Akomplice, not to mention fabulous accessories and DVDs. Be sure to bookmark them and check back often... the cool stuff always sells out!
Speaking of selling out (in a good way), I had the pleasure of seeing Radio Golf this weekend at the Huntington Theater in Boston. I loved it, and highly recommend going if it comes to your area (I know it's slated for Chicago soon!)

Nappy Soldier in the City of Dope

A lot of people have dual personalities. Your "work self" and your "real self." I found this to be true when I was working at a law firm. My "work self" wore cashmere twin-sets and talked about the Red Sox (boring), the housing market in Boston ("Well, Tucker and I are not in the Market right now... but are looking to get back into the market when the time is right...) (by the way, there is/was no "Tucker" but had I been dating one, my firm credibility points would have doubled), and of course everyone was planning weddings.
"What did you do this weekend?" was best answered with: "My boyfriend and I took in a show," rather than explaining that I went to a Dead Prez concert. Anyway, those days have long since passed and luckily I have found a job where the line between my work self and my real self is much less rigid.
Despite that, I still have my "work bags" and my "weekend bags" . . . I love my black Coach work bag, but on the weekends I just want something comfortable, something I can throw my life into and go. For that I've recently discovered Cecilia Jane Bags. I love her Nappy Solider Bag and the Spirit bag with the cool handle. Designer Simonair, hailing from St. Thomas, has been sewing since she was thirteen years old. She not only has great offerings on her site, but will gladly create a custom bag for you as well!

Also, The Grouch and Zion I released a new album this week which is amazing!! Zion I is by far my favorite group... I love Zion's flow. Definitely check this album out... (they have a few free downloads on myspace.com!)

A girl with substance.

Strip away the designer handbag full of buckles, leather and zippers . . . remove the latest blouse that all the "it" girls have . . . peel off the too-tight designer jeans . . . step out of the $600 heels. Pop off the fake lashes, nails and contacts. Wipe away the Chanel lip stick, Mac blush and Arden eye liner. And if you're that girl, remove the hair piece you put in for the club. What do you have left (besides underwear and I wasn't going to go there this early, sorry folks)?

The point is, what you have left is the person, the person minus the stuff. And no matter how much you dress her (or him) up, paint her, accessorize her, at the end of the day, all you ever really have is that person. Your un-done-up self with all the beliefs, morals, convictions that make you who you are. I often think the more whistles and bells people have on the outside, the more they're trying to hide (from the world and themselves) what's going on inside . . . (or worse yet, they're hiding the fact that nothing is going on internally.)

Clothes are, of course, a great way to hide (think: Paris Hilton... what the hell is going on there?)... but they're also a great way to express yourself. The trick is, not to get lost in the message. And to make sure the message has substance. Speaking of substance:

substance is an experiment in societal metaphysics, manifest by a kid in his basement with a critical mind and too many screen printing chemicals that wont wash off his hands. substance is a critique on the overly materialistic society in which we live, one in which basketball players are paid more then doctors, and status is measured in dollars. substance is designed to challenge mainstream fashion and its ignorance, and to provide an alternative to clothing sold next to mannequins with disproportionate bedonkadonks.

I love Substance's message and adore the shirts. . . although I must admit I do take issue with with the "mannequins with disproportionate bedonkadonks" line. Proportion is all relative my friend . . . Truthfully, I'd love to walk into Dior and see a mannequin with a big ol' booty. And with that line, and way too much coffee, I'm out!

Seeing Stars

You know I'm not a big jewelry person. In fact, I'm realizing that more and more as I interact with my co-workers. The women I work with definitely know how to accessorize (as I sit there with the same stud earrings and sliver ring every day). Anyway, my lack of accessory-sense is probably not going to change, but every now and then I come across jewelry sites I want to share. Bella of Cape Cod is one of them-- not only because they have great jewelry, all for under $25 -- but because they're from the Cape, and that's where I grew up. Play Fair

I know you... you work hard and play fair. You're always looking for a good deal, but shun companies that offer them at the expense of their employees' well-being. Your plastics? Recycled. Your conscious? In check. Your coffee? Fair trade. Your clothes? Well now thanks to Fair Indigo you can buy gorgeous clothes that adhere to the same fair trade standards . . .

Currently, fair trade apparel largely consists of small shops selling indigenous clothing but is beginning to expand beyond this niche market. In recent years several fair trade apparel companies have launched in the United Kingdom (notably People Tree and Gossypium) although fair trade apparel in the United States has lagged the European market. With the exception of Fair Indigo, teen retailer American Apparel is the only major brand selling “sweatshop–free” clothing in the United States.

Fair Indigo guarantees that every employee who makes their clothing is paid a fair wage, not just a legal minimum wage, as is the benchmark in the industry.

Now that you know the company's ethics are sound, you may be wondering about the clothes themselves. Trust me when I say they have some truly gorgeous items. The fact that these boots are selling for about the same price as Ralph's (and are much cuter than his, in my opinion) makes you wonder exactly what his employees make ...and makes you appreciate the fact that Fair Indigo gives you the whole story along with a great product!

My posts have been kinda short lately because I'm starting a new job and need to concentrate on that. . . however, fashion always has a special place in my heart so I'll do my best to keep up with this and the awesome e-mail suggestions I've been getting!
The last thing you want to be when you start a new job is naive-- however, when it comes to fashion, being Naive can be wonderful! Naive is dedicated to independent and quality labels that come from different backgrounds and have various reference points. Like so many of the other sites I feature, the site focuses on non-mass produced, hand crafted clothes that are both unique and classy. *No, I haven't been sitting around watching my old Dave Chappelle DVD's all weekend... I've been shopping at OK47, another great site featuring unique, above-the-trend clothes that you'll love. With beautiful silk tops, cool skirts, and gorgeous jackets, Ok47 was a source of inspiration for me back in my RISD/ fashion design days. So I know what you might be thinking. . . oh Urban Socialite, how can you be so knowledgeable about all things fashion and live in Boston.

Now I know Boston might not stand out as a fashion capitol- or even a fashion destination- but trust me- from the wonderful urban culture to the prim socialites prancing down Newbury street, Boston is somewhat of a hidden gem. Like, really well hidden. Like, that cute black top I thought I lost 2 years ago that I found under my bed in the course of my move, hidden.
But, like the top, once you find the fashion pulse in this city its a joyous moment indeed.

Besides, after living in New York and traveling all over, its kind of nice to sit back and take everything in. I was always too caught up in New York, you know? I'd make every effort to keep a critical eye on the fashion scene, and before I knew it I was dancing at the club in some monstrosity that I was brain washed into thinking I had to have. Kind like what people are doing now with leggings.

Anyway, I digress. The point of this post is to highlight Daniela Corte, a local designer who has been receiving a lot of attention lately. Her mantra "timeless elegance in your everyday life" is apparent in her versatile line. For instance, her kimono dress which is "as comfortable as a Sunday morning at home" is totally cocktail appropriate (there's nothing like looking great at those things and actually being comfortable at the same time) and her 327 Combo Dress in turquoise is versatile enough to wear out -- to the grocery store, the office, or a dinner party.
What I like best about her pieces is they're not only versatile but many of them can be worn a number of different ways . . . so its like getting 2-3 garments for the price of one!
The Globe recently did a piece on her (she got her start making custom pants for friends) and Boston Magazine named her Best in Women's Fashion (Party Dresses) for 2006! Go Daniela!

By the way, I desperately need a new wallet... I may have a mild obsession with clothes, but I'm actually not so good when it comes to accessories. I'm thinking of going Coach, but if anyone can suggest something more original I'd love to hear about it!

Well, according to Smiley, a perfume company based in France, it does.

There's no denying it . . . moving SUCKS. Sure the end result is great (in my current case I couldn't ask for more!!) but the process is draining. First, there was my insurmountable stack of clothes. . . then there was my cat (would he let her come?), then there was the stress, sweat, and suckiness of the move itself. Box after box after friggin' box!!

Aside from the stress, there are benefits to even the most annoying parts of this endeavor. For instance, during the process of packing I was able to donate 5 contractor bags of clothes to a local thrift store. Five 45-gallon bags! That's like. . . (doing mental math, insert jeopardy theme) 225 gallons of clothes! So you're probably thinking thats an absurd amount of clothes, and you're right, but do keep in mind I still have things from high school (don't remind me how long ago that was). Plus there were no issues with the cat- which was great. In fact she turned out to be quite the little helper.

Speaking of little helpers, Sabrina Dehoff made a charm in her "little helpers" collection that looks just like my cat (Black C Panther). Ms. Dehoff is a well established German designer who makes adorable charms out of gold, silver, and leather. They're unique, eye catching, and hand crafted so you know each one is special. I'm obsessed!

Wanna know a secret? (I know you do). Well, I was so busy ranting I almost forgot to share this with you . . . (whispering: each item in Edoclaundry's clothing line is more than it seems).

Woven into everything they make are hidden messages and codes most people can’t see. Edoc clothes break across the traditional categories of street, skate/surf, and classic by creating a new category that spans their entire line: Covert. Every piece of gear is a trapdoor into a hidden world.

Once you decipher that phrase, it's time to find the letters hidden in the image on the front of the shirt. You might be looking for paint drippings, hash marks or the frets of a guitar. From afar, it just looks like an ornately designed shirt, but the secret is in there somewhere.

Once you've found all the pieces, and used the key to decipher the text, head to the edoc laundry home page and click where it says "nothing to hide" in the upper corner. Then type your phrase into the box. I'll give you a head start: Enter the words "Call me a patriot" and hit enter.

Ugh! I have to rant today, sorry.
Being as this is a rant, I'm sure there are some logical holes and I just may offend someone, though certain steps will be taken to prevent that... anyway...

There's been a lot of talk about "Black Fashion" recently. Black Fashion, which is almost always associated with "hip-hop fashion," is largely derived from urban youth... and its is everywhere these days. The Museum of the City of New York's current exhibition "Black Style Now" is drawing attention to this phenomenon (check out Ms. Givhan's take in her blog) and the gold-toothed-grillz that have been around in the hip-hop community since the early 1980s (made popular in the 90's by Southern hip-hop artists like Master P and the Cash Money Crew) adorned skinny blond models in Kimora Lee Simmons' Spring 2007 Baby Phat Collection . . .

Ironically, many of the trends created by urban youth originated out of necessity and circumstance... for instance the saggy pant trend is said to have originated in prison... not as a so-called "advertisement for sex" (which is a common misconception) but because belts are not allowed in prison and many of the inmates were given pant sizes that were too big (there's a lot of speculation about this one, but as far as I know, the ill-fitting pants story is the truth). Those in prison, forced to wear the baggy pants are often viewed as "hardended thugs," thus, those who want to emulate them can easily achieve the look with the baggy pants.

The "white-tee trend" has been tied to gang activity all over the country. "The trend's origin is murky. Some say it began at basketball courts in New York, where white tees, [once] devoid of gang colors, became de rigueur..." others point to the fact that the tees, which usually sell for around $5 a shirt are cheap and accessible. (I'm just waiting for the "designer" $50 white-tees with like, platinum stitching, to hit the market...)

Anyway, the point of my rant is, the disturbing thing about this emphasis on "Black Fashion" is two-fold. One, "Black Fashion" is getting pigeonholed into "hip-hop" fashion. I love hip-hop style, don't get me wrong, but there are so many wonderful Black designers/ styles out there. Though hip- hop style is aesthetically pleasing and globally relevant, its not the only fashion movement in the Black community and people need to be aware of that.

Second, and most disturbing to me, is that "Black Fashion" which is clearly a style taken from the young Black community, is being successfully re-marketed to that same group of people. . . for huge profits (its a 1 billion dollar a year industry). Just turn on your local commercial station... ur... I mean, rap video music station like BET. Like it or not, music videos set an acceptable social standard among America's youth (of all races... just check out Brooke Hogan).
In large part through these videos (full of disgustingly overt product placement and a striking emphasis on materialism) marketers have outdone themselves:
They have taken a style, repackaged it, created a lifestyle out of it, and resold it to the very group from which they took it from in the first place.
It's (evil) genius on their part . . . but very frustrating to watch from the sidelines . . .
I don't really know the point of this rant except to point out what I believe is a disturbing trend . . . I guess the baby phat show got me all riled up.
I should also point out a little tip... like leggings, no one should wear grillz . . . ever.
Unless you're a part of Cash Money (is Juvenile still a part of Cash Money? I can never keep up), because really, Juvie isn't Juvie without a platinum smile.

Dreamlines is a non-linear, interactive visual experience. The user enters one or more words that define the subject of a dream he would like to dream. The system looks in the Web for images related to those words, and takes them as input to generate an ambiguous painting, in perpetual change, where elements fuse into one another, in a process analogous to memory and free association.

As Urban Socialites, fashionistas and couture queens anxiously await collections from Carolina Herrera, Oscar De La Renta, Luca Luca, and Max Azria today, I bring you yet another style suitable for the runway, yet a bit more accessible (with one-of-a-kind designs for under $100). Bombpop Designs ' site is a bit illusive... leaving you to wonder who is (or who are) the brains behind this flirty little operation. But, mystery aside, I love the brown and pink dress in their "fashion" section and am always up for a good hoodie.

I used to have a Polaroid camera back in the day... I think I found it in my neighbors garage. Anyway it was great and I actually took some amazing pictures with it. The frustrating thing was, the pictures always ended up fading and yellowing over time. . .
Now, thanks to Helpless Romantic, you can have your photo (sized down and wearable) and keep it too (like, foreva')... as they can turn any picture into a "mini crumple-proof, water-proof, live forever acrylic Polaroid!!" There's even space to add a caption. My sources tell me that Helpless-R only ships in the UK (lucky you if you're there... maybe its a fair trade-off for being stuck with Fergie)... but I bet if you ask them nicely they'd be willing to work something out for you . . . Either way, I love this idea!

So I actually wrote this post Friday, but FireFox froze (grrr) and I lost it....so here I go again.
The gist is, I'm not going to spend too much time covering fashion week. (1) Because I'm not physically there (at least not as of today) and know you can form your own opinions about the various lines; and (2) because 9 out of 10 fashion sites on the web are covering this fabulous event and I know you come here for the freshness, not repetition.

Kofi's mission is noble and his shirts are hot, so his line Annansi Clothing definitely deserves a post:

In 2003 G. Kofi Annan started Annansi Clothing Co. as his way of helping redefine the world’s view of African people and culture. Kofi had become frustrated by the constant misrepresentation of modern day Africans in the media and the effect it had on how people viewed them.
Born in Ghana and raised in Liberia, Kofi was exposed to fashion early on by his mother, a Ghanaian seamstress who created and sold both traditional and western-styled fashions out of their home in Monrovia. Emulating his mother's drawings, he developed a knack for creating complex designs using the few art supplies he got from his father’s travels to Europe and the United States. In 1989 Kofi moved with his family to New Jersey and was shocked by the dated view of Africa expressed by his neighbors and friends. It was then that Kofi decided to try to reshape that false perception and the idea behind Annansi Clothing Co. was born.

This emerging designer has already made a name for himself in the more informed wing of the hip-hop community. The best part about his designs is that they're both aesthetically pleasing and subtlety political... a designer after T's own heart!

Personal Plea

So this is just a personal plea... I had a few of them last year with respect to a certain brand of boot that I won't mention, because I promised I would never mention them again on this site. This plea has to do with leggings. No matter what people tell you and no matter how good Kate Moss looks in them, leggings are not cool and you should never wear them. Period. This whole 1980s shiny fabric/ legging thing has me really concerned. Almost as concerned as our current political situation... but clearly that's a whole different level of fear.

I am baffled by the fact I've actually seen women wearing them around Boston. This one woman the other day had the cutest outfit on... an adorable skirt/ blouse combo. But for some unknown reason she paired it with leggings and those dreadful 1980s suede short-boots. What made her do that? She clearly had an acceptable outfit on and made a concerted effort to ruin it with cropped leggings and those hideous boots. Please don't let this happen to you. I'm on your side. I would never give you bad advice. I'm not making a profit from your clothing choices... the advertisers and fashion magazines are... for the love of all things fashionable (for my own aesthetic peace of mind), please... put down the leggings.

Paula Patton... Thandie Newton perhaps? But alas... My closest "celebrity matches" were Mariah Carey, Emmy Rossum (random), and Jada Pinkett (cute, but annoying as you-know-what). This site is sooo fun and very addictive. While you're there you can also research your ancestry and build your family tree! Fun procrastination for all!

Fashion Week?

I'm still debating whether I'm going to cover fashion week or not... there are a few shows I'd love to attend and write about, but my fear is the fashion blogging world is going to be over- saturated with coverage this year. I'm always striving to bring you something fresh... so we'll just have to see.

Belize was a blast... but I won't bore you with the details because I hate it when people go on and on about their fabulous vacations ("and then, we went to this gorgeous little shop on the outskirts of town....") Ok...so you know how much I love independent, original design, right? So the last thing I ever thought I'd be writing about is basketball shoes. Besides the fact I don't play, I generally think the shoes (think Air Jordan's which retail for over $175.00) are mass marketed, over priced, and over-hyped. Then along comes Stephon Marbury of the NY Knicks. I have nothing but love for Stephon Marbury. Not only did he design a great basketball sneaker, but he did so with a conscious.

Growing up in a Coney Island household with parents struggling to make ends meet, Stephon Marbury knows first-hand the pressure kids, parents and playground basketball players feel to spend top-dollar on the latest clothes and sneakers. Today, as a high- profile NBA player, he's now in a position to realize a lifelong
dream to "change the world" by eliminating that aspect of our culture.
Marbury has announced that he is teaming with national casual apparel
retailer Steve & Barry's to introduce the Starbury Collection.*

False Idols, Gossip Sources, and Shop SoHo

So... I upgraded to the new blogger (all the cool kids were doing it) and I hate it. I hate that stupid Navigation bar at the top and none of my secret codes seem to work to make it go away. Looks like the switch to WordPress may be sooner than I thought! Anyway...
The other day I was browsing through celebrity gossip websites (hey, I'm on vacation!)... is it me or does all celebrity gossip center around the same 4 people? 5 people? You know what I mean. Seriously, what's the obsession with Lindsay Lohan? I mean, I loved Mean Girls as much as the next person... but its like: she's fat, she's skinny, she had a boob job, she's on coke, she's not... I just don't get it. The same goes for Jessica Simpson. Honestly, if you paid me I don't think I could name one of her songs... yet she's everywhere... is it because she's blond?
Anyway for gossip with a bit more flavor, I turn to "Fresh" at Crunk and Disorderly, Cynthia of Juicy-News, and one of my favorite sites (and one of the true originals) WhuDat .com (I love the government tags section... I mean, who knew Chamillionaire's real name was Hakeem Seriki?) The thing about these sites is that they seem to be just one step ahead of the others, in terms of style, trend, and even drama. And even though certain stars show up more than others (the bigger the star, the more coverage, of course), the content scope is broader... and as bonus Lindsay and Jessica are no where to be found!
Speaking of false idols, True Love and False Idols is a streetwear brand that takes the emphasis off hype and emphasizes style, detail, and performance. This unique line of LA based tee-shirts and highly sought after hoodies has been selling out everywhere.... So... I've recovered from the road race. Running for 7.1 miles gave me a lot of time to think, and naturally my mind drifted to fashion and fall's latest trends.

Ok that's a total lie.

Actually all I really thought was "Why does this hurt so much?" "Why is my boyfriend trying to have a conversation with me when its obvious I'm about to pass out at mile 2?" and "Come on Brooke... 4 more miles to go... 3 more... just over that hill...."

It's also a lie because I could care less about fall's latest trends...
Besides the fact you were probably wearing them last year, I'm assuming the last thing you want is to look like everyone else. Brooklyn Sky is an innovative tee shirt design company from BK with such sentiments in mind. With a push to exist outside the latest tee-trends and an interesting brand philosophy, this site is certainly worth a look. They're big on the elephant which is done stylishly... but the image is a bit too political for my taste (I'm partial to the less aesthetically pleasing / socially conscious donkey). Anyway, the brand starting to generate quite a buzz, so catch them while they're hot.

If you're physically in New York you should head over to SoHo to a little shop called Burrow. The shop is run for and by the independent designers and artists themselves, giving customers direct access to the creators and their work. If you're not in NY, check out Burrow's "designers" page for links to many of the designers websites.
Lastly as you may or may not know this is Fashion Indie Week in NY (we'll just call this a NY dedicated post). Check out the site for a list of events and designers. $25 gets you in!

Cardboard Robot makes great tee shirts. Not only are the designs aesthetically pleasing, the images are thought provoking, funny, ironic, and the site generally appeals to that side of me that I tend to (but shouldn't) keep hidden from most of the world.

Back in college we had a friend... we'll call him "Ron." Ron was great... Imagine a slick looking, suit wearing, track and field running, (and more successful version of) "Brain" from Pinky and the Brain and you've got Ron. The thing about his personality was, it was kind of robotic. He'd get a goal in sight and there was no stopping him. His pupils would widen, he'd block out all sound and GO... he was a robot on a mission... calculating like a machine. At some point I began making fun of this aspect of his personality, and over time any reference to 0001010101 would conjure images of him attempting one of his "plans." So when I read the "about" section of Cardboard Robot I laughed out loud and recalled a host of schemes that are probably best left unmentioned publicly. Anyway, I thank CBR for that trip down memory lane-- and for pushing the tee shirt design envelope.*

Ever wonder where that urge to shop comes from? I mean beyond: "those are the cutest shoes ever! I have to have them now!" Well, the Visa Diaries has a fascinating theory (along with some funny anecdotes and wonderful artwork) worth checking out. See, every now and then good things do come out of Yale (just kidding!)

So... this weekend I'm running the Falmouth Road Race. I tell you this because it may be a while before I recover... as in weeks.
I tend to die around mile 3, which as you can see is a bit problematic due to the fact that its less than 1/2 way through the course.

* In case you were curious (I didn't know so I looked it up).... "Pushing the envelope" is an aviation term. It means pushing the aircraft to its limits, especially in the context of flight testing. Envelope has several secondary definitions referring to a collection of curves (mathematical and engineering jargon). So in the world of aeronautical engineering the envelope is the collection of curves that describe the maximum performance of an aircraft. To push the envelope is to take the aircraft to the edge of what it was designed to do and try and take it beyond.

Prelayed responses

This site will e-mail or call you in the future. You may be asking why you would need such a thing. I suppose a lot e-mail programs will do this for you already-- not like I would know anything about using that to get myself out of trouble 4 or 5 times-- but I thought I'd share just in case. The calling program calls and speaks whatever you type in the message in a creepy automated voice. I'm sure you can think of many creative uses for this... or not (honestly I haven't thought of anything good but if I do I'll be sure to share).

Days of our Lives*

Ah, my last summer before I dive head first into the real world. I figure my parents and friends will just give up on me if I go back and do any more schooling, and they're right of course, 19 years spent in a classroom should just about do it...
Anyway, that's why I'm taking it easy this summer.
Yesterday? I read a book. I just sat and read an entire book in the sun. I highly recommend you find the time to do the same, at least once this summer. Though movies are a great escape, there's nothing like getting lost in your own imagination for a few hours. I figure when I worked at a law firm (shudder) I was stuck in a world of monotony all day for an entire summer... the least I can do is counter-balance that with some inspiration. My all time favorite summer reading books are The Great Gatsby, The Invisible Man, and Einstein's Dreams... I read Memoirs of a Geisha yesterday which was also wonderful (I've never seen the movie and hear the book is quite different!)
Anyway, one issue I'm having this summer in my lazy purist of inspiration is what to wear. A while back I wrote about some great reversible tees... but that can get tricky when you do laundry as infrequently as I do. I sat thinking about this predicament the other day, and about "days of the week underwear" (I told you, I have a lot of free time)- and thought "wouldn't it be great if someone made t-shirts like that!?" One quick google search later and viola! Leave it to those clever Aussie's to come up with Monday to Friday, a cute set of 7 colorful tees that take the guess work out of laziness. I was so exited! Look for me wandering around Jamaica Plain in one of these colorful shirts soon (hint: I'll be the girl in the Wednesday shirt on a Friday... the only downfall to these great tees is you actually have to be aware of what day of the week it is!)

Time Killer- Insight Builder

Since I know a lot of you are at work, I thought I'd share a fun little time killer from personaldna.com.

Developed by a team of PHD psychologists from New York University, PersonalDNA differs from other personality tests in its use of fun and intuitive graphical responses to questions rather than yes/no or whole number numerical ratings. The innovative response mechanisms allow for nuanced, and thus more honest answers; honest answers yield a more accurate personality assessment. While strictly anecdotal at this point, tens of thousands of people who have “discovered” the test since the site went “live” are saying that PersonalDNA is “the most accurate personality test” they’ve ever taken.

I have to say taking the test was quite fun and my results were surprisingly accurate! (I even learned something new)

The Nerd in Me...
So as you may know from reading this site, I love Bay Area Hip Hop... especially underground stuff like Zion I, but in general I just love the vibe out there. Hyphy, the Bay Area sound that looked to take off in 2004, in large part due to artists like Federation and E-40, has new life in 06' with E-40's new album My Ghetto Report Card.
The thing with Hyphy and other regional music is it comes with its own set of slang... back in 04' when this movement was picking up, there was talk about copyrighting these terms.
There are actually quite a few cases in this area... for instance in Boone v. Jackson, Copy. L. Rep. (CCH) P29,045 some girl actually sued Fabolous over the use of the term "Holla Back" (she lost)... and in 1997, Juvenile was sued by "D.J. Jubilee" over the use of "back that ass up."
394 F.3d 357 (1997) (Jubilee lost that one too).
Though generic terms like "back that ass up" certainly don't deserve protection (can you imagine the oral arguments in this case!)... creators of the more creative terms like... Flambostulatin' (Acting overly ostentatious)... just may have a point.
Come on, if Michael Buffer can trademark the phrase "Let's Get Ready to Rrrrrrrrrumble," E-40 should be allowed the rights to "Flambostulatin." I'm just saying...

Urban Eyes are smiling

All of that studying over the past couple of months has me seeing double... literally. It's time for some new glasses.
The process is super annoying... especially since it brings me back to the first time I learned I had bad vision, back in the 5th grade. I was so traumatized by the fact I'd have to wear glasses (like glasses were some how the only thing that could stand in my way between bookworm and popular girl)- that I literally threw an embarrassing little fit in the optometrists' office. My mother tried to calm me down and urged me to pick a "nice pair" of glasses. Being as I was upset, and being as it was the early 90's (pink and purple were all the range) I huffily chose a pair of clear plastic purple tinted glasses. My mom explained that I'd be stuck with the frames for at least a year and suggested I pick something else... but no avail. I was the girl with the frizzy hair and purple glasses. Popularity was once again thwarted for at least another 3 years. Anyway- I've finally made peace with the glasses thing (my contacts help) and now even like to play with the more outrageous frames offered (though I'll never go back to purple!)
The king of eyewear originality is Scott Urban of Urban Spectacles:

Dyeing for the perfect T?

Better Thinking is on a mission: to create the perfect t-shirt. Sorry I did the whole quotes thing-- the block quote function is acting up this morning. Anyway-- the company is doing great things and has recently released a report (free for you to download) about the impacts of textile dyeing. The report looks at why we should be concerned about the environmental impact of dyes, then goes on to list the impacts, advantages and disadvantages of conventional dyeing techniques and possible alternatives. A must read for all current and future designers with a conscious!

Sleep Walking

So ... as the future of eyewear goes back to the basics... and the future of textile dyeing looks to be more eco-friendly... I know what you're wondering... what about the future of sleeping bags? (Crazy how I read your mind like that!)
Well if Chilean graphic designer Rodrigo Alonso has a say we'll all be sleep walking in style with the selk'bag wear system. There's not much to say about these seeping bags as they pretty much speak for themselves... they're crazy and they're fabulous... they're so cool they actually make the idea of camping sound like fun (don't get any ideas L...).

A while back I told you about MyShape... The site has improved much since its humble beginnings and is ready to offer you a new way to shop: with your body in mind. Stepping far away from the "pear-shape" "apple-shape" classifications, MyShape allows you to input your measurements for a personalized shape and then gives you recommendations as to what clothes will best accent that fabulous body of yours. (That was a long sentence, wasn't it?)
Anyway, getting your shape takes just a few minutes and in the end may have you looking a halter-tops in a whole new light.

You know that woman who always has the cutest clothes but refuses to tell you where she bought them? She probably shops at Milla by Mail.
Milla (translated to "I got it" in Hindi) is a great little resource that provides simple, sophisticated, and highly fashionable items suitable for both work and play. The site carries some well-known boutique brands as well as up-and-coming designers. Their goal is to bring you the best of what's available each season... I really like the Party Girl Tunic... you all know what a wild and crazy party girl I am...

The Art of Shopping
Something tells me you know a little something about the art of shopping... to add to that knowledge may I suggest The Art of Shopping... a site dedicated to bringing you the summers hottest designers. While The Art of Shopping has great deals on some of the more mainstream brands like 7 for all Mankind, C & C Cali, and Lacoste, it also embraces brands like Harvey's Seatbelt bags (one of my favorites, currently 30% off). Not to mention the scope of the discounts! Not that I'd ever want it, but they recently offered Tod's Exotic Crocodile Handbag for just under $2,000 (normally retails for over $9,000!). Personally I don't do crocodile handbags (not only does the concept bother me, but $2,000 is basically what I live on each month!)- but the example gives you an indication of the kind of deals the site is willing to offer. You have to sign up to get in (isn't that always the way)- and the current sale ends in two days so check it out while you can! (Also, I apologize for that song that plays when you click on the site- its pretty horrible).

I don't remember exactly how I learned about Individual Icons (I think it was a suggestion based on a suggestion.... like a riddle wrapped in an enigma...lol), but once there, I was hooked. Strong Girl Inc. is a little design studio in Chicago featuring eye-catching tops that are sure to turn heads. I love these designs- they're truly original as they combine urban, classic, and classy styles. Strong Girl's designer believes "in EMPOWERING girls starting at a young age so they have the opportunity to grow into confident, intelligent women." Her work clearly comes from a place of self-empowerment- her shop is definitely worth a visit!

Yo!! What's the deal with these 90's stars!?
I'm not one to write about celebrities because in most cases, I don't care. I mean, every now and then a story raises my eyebrow - but generally I could care less about what's-his-name's crazy religion or what's-her-name's new baby.

These stories, however, are too ridiculous not to mention.
First, I don't know the whole scoop- but apparently Aaron Spelling of 90210/ Melrose Place died.... I was never a huge 90210 fan, but I have to admit I looooved Melrose Place. Amanda was amazing... and of course, Kristin Davis was gorgeous as Brooke (all Brooke's are fabulous, don't cha know).
Anyway, so A.S. was worth like $300 million when died and left his "why-was-she-cast-for-this-show?" daughter just under a million. I can "understand her anger"... I mean from what it sounds like she was totally waiting to cash in.
I hear she's going to all these extremes to supplement her meager inheritance, including selling her clothes on ebay. I didn't believe it at first, but rumor mill Idontlikeyouthatway.com has the whole scoop, including a link to her ebay site. It's so sad because its like a site full of broken dreams. 90210 dolls, magazine covers and really ugly clothes in size ana- 000.
The annoying part is, you'd think she's destitute. Do you know what I could do with "just under a million dollars?" Pay off my all my undergrad and law school loans and buy a cute little condo in Jamaica Plain and still have money left over to supplement my desire to pursue a career in public interest law.
I don't feel sorry for her.

To make 1990's TV matters worse, we turn our attention to Saved by Bell. Saved by the Bell always bothered me from numerous reasons... for instance, why was Lisa (so hot!) always stuck with Screech? Anyway, speaking of Screech- he is apparently in such a bad way that he's actually selling t-shirts in an attempt to save his house from foreclosure. Weren't there like 10 seasons plus two spin-off shows and a movie?! What did he do with all his money?

Detroit Gets Crafty... Urban Socialites Everywhere... and a cool contest!

You gotta love the glove... no wait... that's Gary Payton... (basketball reference for those who don't know/ don't care).
You gotta love the mitten.... Good ol' Detroit is back! Buckle your seat belt-belts because the 2006 Detroit Urban Craft Fair looks like its definitely going to be a ride! (I really should go into advertising, shouldn't I?). With designers like Striptease (dress, right), Aqua Cherry (great handmade bags), and Daisy Sewing (I'm feeling the patchwork wrap skirt) this juried show is definitely worth the trip if you're in the area.
It seems like every year there are more and more of these independent shows- its so great to see the creativity and originality that these designers bring to fashion!!

Urban Socialites Galore
On a different, yet similar note, I was kinda sad to find a website called "Urban Socialite Magazine" the other day. Please know I have NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT SITE. I mean its cool they're doing their thing, but that's not what I'm about-

The same goes with Urban Socialite Inc. which is part of Good Life - the magazine. Their stuff is actually pretty hot- US Inc. puts on these cool events in Philly and Good Life has some interesting content on it's site. Worth a look, especially if you're in the Philly area.

In terms of that stuff though, be assured this site is strictly dedicated to you, the fashion conscious / fashion designer and my random thoughts. I would like to say that I was the "original urban socialite." When I first thought up the name for this site there were only 5 other references to "urban socialite" on the web. Anyway, giving credit where credit is due, the first use of the term I'm aware of was a site called Carlwithak.com (tagged- carl with ak :: political hipster, urban socialite) which has since shut down.

This is a fashion blog, so I always do my best to stay away from controversial issues, but I definitely think its important to recognize that though this independent community may seem small at times- its really a global affair. There are certain terms that make me cringe. "Piggy-backing" is one of them. Every single work/ school related thing I've ever been a part that deals with issues like "sensitivity," "feelings" or "teamwork" has somehow incorporated "piggy-backing" into the vernacular.

So I'm not going to say this post is "piggy-backing" on my last post... but because the thought occurred to me causing me to endure flash backs of "trust" games with fellow co-workers that I clearly didn't trust, you go this little intro. It's only fair.

I love independent designers and people who are trying to make it in the industry- mostly because I can live vicariously through them as I sit amongst piles of paper.
I love sites like Dlisted because Michael K is hilarious and doesn't hold back on anyone or anything. Anyway rest assured I don't get paid to post and clearly there are no ads on this site. Once you go down that road, it stops being fun.... plus, lets be honest, I'm way too lazy to keep up with that sort of thing.

Still studying.... not sleeping... etc. Anyway, you know I'm not into LV, but BlueFly is having a contest where you can win a LV Chest or "other luxury loot" just by playing their little flash game. I know... not an original designer- and clearly your chances of winning are like nil- but hey, is free! Besides, clicking those little gold coins just may be the most exciting thing I do today... (sigh). Also, in other scratch your head news, Fonzworth Bentley has released his latest single..."since I was 9".... from "butler" to MC? Seriously, what's wrong with hip hop these days?
Anyway, I promise to back to the independent designers and stuff in a bit, I just need to work through this exam .... stuff- or shall I be like Bush and use my favorite expletive?

So.... I'm still studying... sorry for the lack of contact recently.
Also I have no idea what happened to the layout of the site, seeing as I haven't touched it in days... so I did this, which I hope is cool... at least for now.

I have been spending 12 hours a day at the library... far far away from the world of fashion.

Mmmm... see that big comfy pillow from Swigg? I won't be seeing that for a while...
Alas, my giant bar/bri book has become my pillow and my dreams are about consideration and assignment... but you, my non-studying friend should stop by Swigg and check out Stephanie's cute collection of pillows. The Swigg Critters II would be great for you and would also make great kids gifts! If you're looking to buy Swigg, you should stop by Rare Device - a cool little shop run by Rena Tom. Not only do they have a fresh supply of Swigg pillows (I just love that word, Swigg) the shop also carries Margaret Nicole's ultra preppy yet decidedly unique totes.
Margret Nicole, home of the infamous totes, is located in New York's Greenwich Village and is certainly making a name for itself... my advice? Get it and enjoy it now before everyone else has it.

So... its 4th of July weekend and I just wrapped up an 8-hour day of studying. Ask me about Congressional authority... go ahead... ask me! Anyway, since the night sky will be lighting up in a couple days I thought I'd write about a different kind "bling..." the kind that thumbs its nose at gaudiness and shines with clean lines and a very interesting form. Danielle Mavel makes really cool jewelry out of precious metals and acrylic. I know what you're thinking... but trust me, her designs have this really cool way of being both cute and sophisticated at the same time. Her playful concepts drive the collection and separate her work from the rest of the field. Definitely worth checking out!

Face it, shopping for the right bathing suit can be torture. You travel from high end boutique to that giant "swim" table at J.Crew, frantically looking for that rare XL/ S or M/ XXS combination, when all that seems to be left in the cute styles are XXS's and XXL's-- a combo that clearly isn't going to cut it. You end up settling for something reasonably cute from a reasonable store, like Gap or Banana, only it's just a tinsy bit off, leaving you to question whether or not it actually looks good. This is never good because no matter how perfect or imperfect your body is, a little confidence is always the perfect accessory when it comes to wearing that sexy two-piece. What you need to do is step away from the average swimsuit shopping experience and head on over to Lisa Curran Swim. Her line has everything (and I mean everything).... from the skimpy bikini, to the "strategically designed," (she knows what she's doing) to some of the cutest maternity suits I've ever seen! Plus, Evan, who recommended her, vouches for the fact she's a lovely person- and trust me, in light of past swimsuit experiences I can't think of anything better than buying a lovely designer bikini from a lovely designer!

* Also, I'm trying to get all modernized and stuff so I updated my myspace account. I don't really "get" the whole myspace thing... but if you have an account or some cool designs definitely add yourself to my page. I'll check there for content as well!

Let's face it. The work-place supply room is rarely a fashionable place. Bic pens, black staplers, and yellow highlighters... ugh! Even I, who in a dorky way love office supplies, get bored with the bland selection found in most supply stores. Apparently, I'm not alone- which was one of the motivating factors behind See Jane Work.

The idea for See Jane Work came when one of Holly's many trips to Office Depot left her feeling frustrated and unsatisfied. "There is only so much you can do with smoke-colored plastic trays," she exclaimed "There must be another way!" After consulting with several friends, she realized there were stylish office supplies out there; they were just so hard to find. See Jane Work was born, the online destination for office style and organization.

Pandora's (music) Box

If you haven't already discovered the world of Pandora, I thought I'd give you the heads up on this fantastic music resource this weekend. Pandora is based on the The Music Genome Project.

Each song in the Music Genome Project is analyzed using up to 400 distinct musical characteristics by a trained music analyst. These attributes capture not only the musical identity of a song, but also the many significant qualities that are relevant to understanding the musical preferences of listeners.

The Project's database is updated on a continual basis with new releases and emerging artists...
In short, you enter the name of an artist that you love (like Zion I) and Pandora will find other artists for you (like Omni) based on some complex stuff I'm too tired to understand or get into now. The site has links to most music on iTunes (as well as a link to where you can purchase a CD)... Seriously, all you have to do is set a station, sit back, and enjoy. I'm loving it!!! (So mad McDonald's ruined that expression).

Sorry every time I bring up McDonald's I'm reminded of their "I'd hit it" ad...

Do you ever feel unappreciated? Like you work yourself crazy all day only to turn something in to your boss that she either (a) doesn't need anymore or (b) doesn't even remember asking you to do? And then of course there's the old story of doing something nice for someone, only to have them take it for granted... "Thanks for X, but while you were there why didn't you pick up Y?" (sorry, since I started studying X and Y have become my new best friends).
Lets face it: we work hard and deserve some appreciation. That being said, you can imagine how graffiti artists must feel. Sneaking around at all hours, hiding their process, and often seeing the destruction of their work shortly after its created. Truly, some of the their work is just breathtaking. For confirmation head on over to the Wooster Collective, a great site that collects inspiring graffiti art from all over the world. The graffiti movement has been percolating underground since as long as I can remember. Now, with the advent of modern media, its been able to expand ... for instance, a recent picture
painted on the outside of a Bristol (UK) sexual health clinic has actually sparked debate among the town's citizens as to whether or not it should be removed. Mark Jenkins has added a three dimensional element to this work (seen above)... his sculptures, created with tape, have become a D.C. phenomenon!
Textual Healing (gotta love it) "uses a cell phone, a computer, and a projector to create a mobile public performance by posting a person's text messages into speech bubbles that are strategically placed on the facades of buildings." Confused? Check it out here and wait for this cool art/technology comes state-side.
The BBC has even gotten in on the act with Taggerz- an online cartoonumentary of the lives of real graffiti artists.

What's great about this kind of art is there is little room to question why people do it. They're (usually) not paid, risk possible arrest and generally don't get that much positive publicity. They do it for the love and for the art, and really, shouldn't those things be the motivating forces behind everything? Anyway, you don't take my word for it (inadvertent Reading Rainbow reference... now I'm gonna have that song stuck in my head all day!) check out the Wooster Collective and see for yourself!

Sea Side Scuttlebutt

If you're like me during the summer, you're always on the lookout for that perfect beach day. Unfortunately, if you're really like me, the beach day usually falls on a Tuesday (following a rainy weekend) and the best you can hope for is an early morning or late evening jog for a glimpse of sun -- the beach a 10-mile-away-dream out your office window. Well dream no more. Or at least take the step of brining your dream along with you to work. I'm obsessed with VivaTerra's Recycled Sailcloth Bags. These cute summery designs are actually made from recycled sails with likewise, sail-inspired graphics.*

The hand tote's nautical rope handles provide a sure grip, and the oversized beach shoulder tote features a roomy inside zipper pocket and green grass design. Ah the first day of summer. Time to break out the air conditioner and fight people over the fans on sale at CVS (sadly, I witnessed this just the other day). Honestly, you could save a lot of time and energy (if you're not already motivated to do so, check out An Inconvenient Truth) if you just laid around in your underwear all day. I mean, who needs clothes anyway? Especially with fierce designs from the likes of Malicious Designs. I actually chose Malicious Designs for two reasons... one, because Sheana Hinesley is a fantastic designer and I want just about everything on her site-- and two, because "intent is key in willful, malicious conduct crimes" and there's nothing like writing about fashion and being reminded of a criminal law rule at the same time. Ok, so I just made up the second reason as I was typing. And yes, it was kind of dorky, sorry about that. Anyway, ignore that last part and support Sheana by browsing and buying her adorable undies. If you're really looking to add to your lounge-about look, you should also check out We Love Colors. This site is devoted to details, offering a large selection of cute hosiery items in over 45 different colors. Fishnets and lace? Looks like its gonna be a hot summer!

Ah yes... another day in the Hamptons, blotting away remnants of your Mojito (oh wait, wasn't that last summers drink?) with your perfectly delicate pale yellow bandana, courtesy of LeRoy Jenkins. LeRoy who? This enigmatic Dolce and Gabbana of Urban culture is doing big things and just may be driving force behind the next Urban clothing movement. He turns his chiseled nose (check out the logo) up to Kanye and his striped polos and reminds us that true men aren't afraid to wear floral.

This concept is exactly why I love fashion. In this simple way of combining Urban silhouettes with contradictory of fabrics, LJ turns tradition on its head and elicits double-takes without resorting to the ridiculous (like becoming a walking advertisement/ commodity for you-know-who -- hmmm... I digress).

Even though I doubt I'd like Kanye if I met him - I do appreciate the fact he brought the whole classic thing back to urban culture (I know, I know he wasn't the first to do it, but he's really done a lot to legitimizing that look lately... we're not gonna acknowledge Killa Cam's role in the whole thing in this post). Anyway, I'm grateful, not just because there's nothing better than seeing a tattooed man with cornrows in a pink polo shirt (collar up, of course) but because its about time that look got rejuvenated altogether. Freaky Friday

What is that? Honestly, I have no idea. Kind of like my study of property law. Property and I just don't get along. Its not that the concepts are out-of-this world, I just don't have the time to sit and understand all the nuances. My new approach is just take a deep breath and absorb the whole of the subject. Let the words "fee simple subject to a complete defeasance " expand in my brain until they find a spot where they take on meaning.
A similar approach can be applied to the amazing, indescribably appealing toys(?) at Strangeco. No need to try to understand why the basketball shoe box has legs and eyes, or why the turtle has somehow been converted into a camper- the site same says it all: this stuff is strange. But its cool. And trust me, that friend you have that has everything? He doesn't have Booted Glamour Cat. What will he do once he receives such an item? The possibilities are endless, but at least you know he wont be able to call you unoriginal !

In times of frustration, its always good to surround yourself with people who inspire you and keep you smiling. The other day when the enormity of the amount of material I'm supposed to learn in 6 weeks became reality, I was lucky enough to get a 45 minute dose of inspiration. Cuffed for Your Crimes

I'm always losing things.
Example 1: Expensive daily planner which contains every address I've ever collected plus every appointment I've ever made...
Lost: Post Office Square while absorbed in a sketch I was making of a scene by a fountain. (In case you're wondering it totally wasn't worth it- the sketch sucked, anyway. . .)

Example 2: Cell phone which contains every number I've ever collected . . .
Lost: in a bathroom at a club in Philly, because I thought it would be a good idea to put down while I washed my hands and leave it there for 2 hours.

Example 3: Wallet. . .
Lost: Which time?

You get the picture. I'm clearly a bit absent minded. Some might go as far as to say I'm flighty, (defined as "guided by whim and fancy.") Even if that's the case, being flighty isn't a crime, right? (looking thought my notes. . . just kidding)

Well, crime or not, our girl Linz Shelton is about to slap some cuffz on me! (Oh come on, this is a great transition and you know it!!). Cuffz by Lintz is a collection of ingenious handbags that are stylish, eye catching and practical.

Sometimes its those little extras that get us through the week. I've collected some little gems for you today from places near and far on the web. The first, above is one of the coolest organizers I've seen, designed by Reinhard Schmoelzer. The concept, touts Plasticashop, is simple in that you make your own design from "Harry's" unique flexible wires. You can shape them into hooks, rings, claws, whatever you want. Whoever thought art and organization could co-exist?

I know, I know, it doesn't pay to be destructive. . . I should embrace the stack of books I have sitting on the floor next to my desk as "giant stacks of useful knowledge." I should applaud the
newly acquired fact-feed that flows through my mind and its accompanying redbull/ starbucks induced buzz. I should not have ideas of destroying the stack of questions that need to answered between now and late July.
Luckily for me I can focus my need to destroy on something much less destructive - DISTRO.Y, a great site with truly unique designer clothing features (among other things) 100% organic cotton shirts that are hand dyed, cut and placed by hand, embroidered & screen printed.
Plus DISTRO.Y's home base is in the Bean- and you know how much I love local designers!

A funny thing happens when you spend all day studying. Your "normal" becomes this sedentary state which consists of sitting in silence and reading. All day. At first I thought I'd become overly inspired once I was done. Like any piece of art or design would excite me and I'd be overflowing with creative energy. Unfortunately its had an opposite effect. I find myself almost content with white pages full of black words. It takes a lot to shake me from my focused, studied, state. I realized yesterday that I needed a cure- Lowercase Industry came just in time. This underground shop is located in the UK and I'm loving the t-shirt graphics and featured paintings. Best of all, the site and its contents are built with a true love for art and design. Just the kind of thing to shake me from the doldrums of studying.

So another reason I've been less vocal lately is because many of the issues that have been bothering me have been political. Because this is a fashion-based site, I've refrained from introducing those questions and thoughts here, because really this is a place to escape (for both of us, yes?)

At the same time, there is a lot of . . . "stuff" going on right now that needs to be addressed. The frustrating part about the whole thing is that politicians seem to side step the big issues in lieu of addressing their own absurd self-interests. Anyway, one interesting site trying to create a solution to this is "dropping knowledge." Basically the site seeks to turn apathy to activity:

No more budget blues

You, fabulous site reader, probably don't need any help in the fashion department. You are of course, above the trends . . . in fact you set them. You know the best shops-- online and around the corner. You know where to get those adorable tees that no one else has and those purses that put L.V. to shame. Alas, if you're anything like me, you're on a budget. This provides a tricky little glitch at times. That's why fellow blogger Kathryn Finney's new book "How to Be a Budget Fashionista" (named after her widely popular fashion blog) is just what we've been looking for. With everything from a fill-in-the-blank budget form, to informative lists (you know how important those closet staples are), to great shopping strategies, this book has it all. Kathryn's writing style, like her blog, is fun, familiar, and sprinkled with humor. Set up in an informative format with little snippits, diagrams, and interactive charts, the books is great read cover-to-cover but can also be enjoyed randomly. Things that can be enjoyed randomly are always appreciated in my world.

I've never been a very good flirt. In fact, I can pretty much say with 100% certainty that I have no game. Fortunately for me I can let my clothes do the talking. Enter: Mighty Flirt and their gorgeous "emerging designers" section! Mighty Flirt is yet another on-line destination for new and independent fashion designers. What sets it apart from the rest? The fact that each piece in the online shop has been hand selected "with the 'wow' factor in mind" ensuring you'll feel absolutely fabulous in everything they sell. The site also carries a nice selection of vintage clothes as well. . . I don't know, for some reason vintage and I just don't mesh... The day after a long break... there's really nothing like it. As rested as I may feel, I could use about one more week... maybe two... but alas I'm here on my last day of freedom trying to make sense of the fact I have to spend the next 2 months studying. Non-stop. 8-9 hours a day! Anyway I won't bore you with the details.
Some details I'm happy to share are those found in Mecha's brightly colored clothing line from Mexico! Mecha's designer, Metztli Mancilla, is well known in the industry for her fresh take on modern fashion and her approach to sustainable design. Its easy to get stuck in a box. The box can be small, confining, suffocating... or it can be huge, expansive and full of possibility -- but its still a box. At the end of the day, it has four corners and four walls and if you keep walking you're destined to bump into one of them.
Sometimes it's a good thing. You certainly don't want to wander around forever, directionless, with no beginning, middle, or end. Take for instance, that project you've been working on. Its nice to have that boxed off from say... your boring 9 to 5 job (or maybe you're one of the lucky ones with an invigorating 9-5!?) When you're working on that project you're inspired, creative and impassioned. You jump in that box, splash around and will eventually come out of it with a great finished product.
The same goes for your job (assuming you have the boring kind)-- you certainly don't want be totally preoccupied with your fun project during work or else you'd never complete the less inspired tasks of your day.
The trick with boxes, I think, is to make sure you have more than one (but not too many). Maybe 3 or 4: Three or four sturdy boxes that you can move between, but that all compliment each other in some way or another and form the building blocks (or boxes) of your fabulous self.
Today I'm not so much going outside the box, but wandering away from our shores for a bit (design is big box) to the fashion port of Singapore! This South-East Asian gem is home to some breathtaking fashion, including a site you're destined to love: Hansel.
Hansel is the brainchild of Jo Soh whose motto "Context is all," drives her fresh, inspired line of womenswear. I'm especially in love with the way she molds her collections around playful themes... the poem about Mr. and Mrs. Tan is as playful and fun as the collection itself.
And if you couldn't tell from her clothes . . . the fact that she named her line after her beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Hansel, shows that she has just the kind of sense of humor and creativity to make it to the top!

Yesterday my friend Pai had on an adorable hat, which reminded me that I wanted to tell you about Goorin Brothers... but you probably already know about this company as its been around for over 100 years. What makes it unique is its unwavering devotion: to hats. With many unique styles to choose from you're sure to find something that fits your look on this fashion-staple's site.

Now personally I think I look pretty ridiculous in hats, but I've always admired people who can pull them off . . . Especially those who wear them to the point that the hat becomes kind of a trademark or symbol of the person.

Speaking of symbols and marks, I've been going through tons of e-mails lately, all leading me to various sites and designers. One thing that really makes sites stand out is a great logo . . . the better the logo, the more apt people are to click through your goods and appreciate your work. In today's world where image is just as important, if not more important, than actual substance, a logo can really make or break a new company. Plus, its easier to remember where you saw something if you can associate a style with a logo.

The problem with writing about independent fashion is, I've become spoiled. This weekend I went shopping at a HUGE factory outlet mall.... it had everything from Banana Republic to Barneys... Coach, Lacoste, Bebe, you name it...
The problem was, nothing really appealed to me. Sure, stores like Saks and Barneys have beautiful clothes, but the problem was many of the "new" items were styles I saw last year in your collections. Now I know that's part of the whole factory-outlet experience... some of the clothes will of course be outdated, but I mean everything was a snooze.
Needless to say, I'm going to stick with independent design and save the outlet shopping for all the suits I'm going to have to wear next year (gulp).
Anyway . . . as I mentioned last week, I'm on vacation. The outfit of choice: Salt Works Jeans and t-shirt. After wearing my FreeGums shirt two days in a row (You thought I was kidding? And no, no one noticed, just in case you were wondering), its time for something new (and a load of laundry).
Time for my Heavy Tee... This site is great because not only does it have some of the hottest t-shirt deigns I've seen, it also has a great T-shirt of the Month Club. I'm on vacation right now... and vacation means I don't have to wear work-clothes. This is a good thing... except for the fact that I pretty much want to wear the same thing everyday -- a pair of Salt Works Jeans and t-shirt. Maybe a cute pair of shoes, but like I've said in the past, I'm not much of shoe person. I'm kind of feeling those black Velcro Lacoste sneakers though... anyway, I digress...
The problem with this whole jeans and t-shirt thing is, not only do I want to wear that cambination every day, I pretty much want to wear the same jeans and t-shirt every day. Sometimes I do... I mean, its not like I smell or anything. Plus, a t-shirt worn twice is kind of nice (non-intentional rhyme there...), its more relaxed, fits in all the right places, and is much less work than washing it the night before...
(Scratching my head and wondering if I should be sharing all of this)...

Anyway... my lazy, somewhat unkempt (yet still fabulous) vacation-loving self adores FREEGUMS by Alvaro Ilizarbe. Not only are these shirts adorable and graphically satisfying... many of them are also reversible!! This means that not only do I get to wear the same t-shirt two days in a row... no one will notice because each side has a unique graphic design!

My better self is telling me that this whole "two-day-in-row" thing is not really the point of these reversible t-shirts... regardless, they’re terrific and you should definitely check them out.

Spring Sprouts

I love spring... all the trees are sprouting, the lilacs are blooming... its a gorgeous time!
It's also a time for babies -- as demonstrated by the onslaught of celebrity moms these days.
Though Angelina, Katie, and Brooke mean nothing to me, their little bundles of joy signify a problem I often have: what to get my new-mom friends! Spunky Sprout has it covered:

Details: A Howe To Guide...

One of my flaws (I know its hard to believe after reading this that I have any...) is that I'm not so good with details. I know, I know... it's all in the details. At least that's what they tell me. Still it's something I sometimes struggle with. I'm a great "big picture" person ... that's probably why I like studying trends so much. I like to see the way global trends interact with each other and affect fashion from the super-trendy to the independent-minded. Even more exciting to me is seeing common themes flow through independent fashion up to the mainstream. By the time they reach most celebrities and department stores, you (the independent designer and shopper) of course, have moved on to something fresh.

Sometimes I think it might not details in general, but certain kinds of details that give me problems. I remember walking around RISD during the summer of 2003 and marveling at the tiny instances of art scattered around campus. From a single breathtakingly (and painstakingly) carved tile in a sea of bumpy cobblestones -- to the intricate pattern some clever students made with strips of paper in their various dorm room windows -- the beauty of that place and the subtlety of its art has always struck me.

I think more than having a problem with all details- is I trick myself into missing details when they seemingly don't inspire... when they're not art. This is a problem though, because art is everywhere... I suppose my assignment to myself as I embark on this summer is to embrace art in all of its various forms ... from the Mass Art subway stop that subtly and graphically calls on those who pass by to GLANCE, to the 1000's of pages of bar studying that await... there is a beauty and an art to each -- the trick is to find it, embrace it, and hope that an appreciation of the details -- those all important details will follow...

Whew... Moving on to fashion. I thought since I ranted about my newfound attempt to appreciate details, I'd write about someone who has no problems in this area: Jade Howe from the Hause of Howe. Jade is not your typical menswear designer as he takes fine-lines and English tailoring and couples them with stunning graphic t's and movable style.
Howe is a full collection of premium sportswear that includes denim and non-denim bottoms, tees, wovens, sportcoats, vests, as well as classic 3-piece suits with a decidedly alternative edge.

Designer Jade Howe feels a close connection to the brand’s loyal following of artists, musicians, creative entrepreneurs, and the new type of business-meets-street professional he refers to as ‘indie executives.’ “We articulate an authentic point of view that our customer relates to – [Jade] responds to the fact that we are developing a lasting look, not just a trend."

He describes his line as English tailoring with a sort of rock-and-roll edge. I like it because to me, it represents a perfectly classic (and classy) look with just the right amount of urban detail (ah yes, it all comes back to details). Ugh. When will this rain stop? Good thing I have great fashion to distract me from the depressing scene outside my window! I'm actually in the market for a dress to wear to graduation. Up until last week I didn't even know I was supposed to wear a dress... but that's another story....
My first stop in this endeavor? SixOneSix... An up-and-coming fashion shop filled with up-and-coming fashion designers. With super-reasonable prices (the great twist top above left is only $20!) and a great collection of clothes from newly discovered designers, you won't be disappointed. More stories later, I'm late!

Fashion's Star*

A while back I got a free subscription to "Star" magazine. Embarrassed at first (I live with a bunch of med school students, so I as pull "BRITS' BABY BONANZA!!" out of my mail box, the woman next to me is pulling out Scientific American and Psychology Today... Anyway)... I finally grew to accept the rag (I like free things). I even moderately enjoyed flipping through the glossy pages, looking at pictures of famous people picking their noses, running away from paparazzi, and kissing people they weren't supposed to be kissing. Overall, the concept of the magazine --gossip, glossy pictures and "fashion" -- is appealing, its just that I don't care about Brad, or Brit or any of the other 12 people they seem to photograph incessantly (am I supposed to know who "Kristin Cavallari" is??)
Another down side is the magazine doesn't know a thing about fashion. Finally, with sites like the The Superficial, Dlisted, or Starvis Says, my up-to-the-minute celebrity gossip is just a click away, leaving most of the magazine outdated by the time it arrives. Lucky for us there's another option. The Daily Mini is a somewhat gossipy (but about people we actually care about... sort of) glossy that sets itself apart from the rest. A mini version of The Daily, the perfectly handbag sized magazine is full of glorious photographs, breathtaking (real) fashion and interesting gossip about interesting people...
A mini (and worthy) splurge.

It-Bags for the E-Go Maniac

Everyone knows that IT-bags are played-out. Not that the purse-powers that be aren't putting out some great stuff... it's just that everyone has them. A new buckle here, a foreign animal skin there ... it seems like the purses are getting more and more outlandish, just to prevent imitation and to stay ahead of the curve. The It-bag above is a bit different. I have to first preface this with the fact that I'm a Mac person. I looooove my Mac. But I know there are tons of PC-princesses out there and this is just for you.
The E-go (how apropos) hasn't been released in the United States yet. This Dutch take on form and function may be wait-list worthy though and they're set to release them in this country sometime later this year/ early 2007. Think of them as super equipped, super-stylish, super-computers.

Motherly inspiration/ modular inspiration

Inspiration is everywhere. For instance, my mother has been a huge inspiration in my life-- among many other things, she amazingly found a way to keep me grounded through law school. She encouraged my art and this site and refused to let me turn into one of those monotonous "why'd I invite her to the party" law-school drones. Its also her birthday today:

Quand on a que l’amour à offrir en partage…et qu’on ne sait pas encore parler.

So... I had this database of site-subscribers on Constant Contact which was great, but since I reached over 50 subscribers a long time ago, the powers that be want me to pay like $200 to access the list. This would be fine if I was somehow making money from this site, but alas I do it solely for love and the clothes... and really, shouldn't those two things be the motivating factors for everything?
Anyway, unless one of you lovelies has access to a free car or a free Mac (my two pending purchases) I must say goodbye to Constant Contact and all its e-mail-campaigning greatness.
That being said (and I know I've been lazy about this) I still have some wonderful offers I'd like to share with you... offers far too hush-hush to share with the causal site-visitor. I'm still working out the mailing list thing. In the meantime I added a cute little email button in the top right right-hand corner of the page. It will open your email program and send you to 'the list'. I like to think of this process as quaint. It's hard to be elitist when you haven't quite worked it into your budget. With clothes its one thing. Fabulous clothes have this distinct way of finding their way into my closest, budget or no budget. Cars on the other hand...
Anyway you didn't come here to read about my problems, you came to escape yours... even if just for a few seconds. For some, nothing spells escape like a pair of $260 shoes for $60.... or how about a pair of Blue Cult MILF Jeans for $49 (retail is $149).... if you're into that sort of thing you should stop by Planet Lulu's on-line sample sale. You have to go to the site and sign up (its by invite only darling... sooo exclusive)... and they'll send you an e-mail with the date and time of the sale. Be warned... the response is so overwhelming that sometimes their servers go a bit haywire.... also.... you've gotta click fast. The good stuff is gone in the blink of an eye... literally.

I have this giant white wall in my room that's just begging for some art. I've put up pictures and taken them down... I tried a print... a batik.... nothing seemed to work. Then someone suggested I try wall art. Wall art? I asked. After a few seconds on blik's website and I understood... and I was hooked.

Philly Love

I was definitely feeling the love in Philly this weekend. If you've never made the trek to the Penn Relays... you've been missing out! By far my favorite track meet of the year, this event brings together a wide array of track and field athletes from all over... some of the fastest people in the world! Yours truly competed for fun-- obviously not close to being one of the fastest people in the world... or in my state for that matter... actually the guy down the block looks like he could be beat me too. Anyway, despite that- my relay, the meet, and the company I kept were all amazing!
Philly itself is a gorgeous city. You know I couldn't leave without bringing you some fabulous fashion... and where better to turn than Art Star. They have a great collection of works from all different kinds of artists (see above). Their exhibitions rotate every 6 weeks and their boutique offers shoppers everything from handmade clothes, jewelry & accessories to dolls, ceramics & prints.Speaking of ceramics.. check out Fosters Urban Homewear a cute Philly hotspot with great toys for your kitchen, bath, and bedroom. Technically Speaking....

You may not [care to] remember the 80s... but you have to admit the time had a certain charm. Like B-Boys walking down the street with their boom boxes listening to pre-bling hip-hop. So much has changed in 20 years.... Giant boomboxes have been replaced by miniscule iPods (with color screens), and hip-hop (not real hip-hop, but the popular 'Dem Franchsize Boyz' brand of music), is slowly ensuring its own demise. In the 80's those who had computers saved information on 5.25" inch floppy disks which (I'm told) could hold like, one document... now we have flash drives the size of our fingers which can hold entire case files. Crazy!
Why all this talk about the 80s? To celebrate the 06' throwback from LifePod , of course. Their line of retro/ stylish purses, wallets, and backpacks are specially designed to blast sounds from your iPod, satellite radio, Sony PSP, or CD player (you can buy them direct from LifePod or look for them on one of my web favorites My Own Space).
