Get Style (from NY Metro.com) Give Style (to those less fortunate)

Have you been following NY Fashion week? I was pleasantly surprised with Betsy Johonson's collection as shown in the New York Metro above. Not only is the collection refreshing with bright colors, but its totally wearable. I can't really say the same thing about Baby Phat. I was disappointed with the dark colors and almost dominatrix like designs. I'm just not feeling it. Another highlight was Imitation of Christ's collection as pictured above to the right, also from New York Metro.com.

Fashion week always reminds me of two things. The first is how much I love art... I mean when you think of the time, effort and sheer creativity it took to create these lines... It's truly mind blowing. I remember I had this idea for a skirt a few summers ago... Sketching it was a breeze.... next I bought the fabric, which was actually more expensive than I had imagined... I took the sewing machine my mother gave me and got to work.... Now, granted these designers have had more training than a few RISD drawing classes, but still... My skirt looked more like a fabric massacre than haute couture.

Anyway the second thing fashion week reminds me of is the excess we have all come to take for granted. It's so easy to get wrapped up in the luxury and volume of it all... even if, like me, you can't really afford anything off the runway. As much as I appreciate the art, I also appreciate my ability to appreciate it... know what I mean? Anyway, I got two bags together last night full of clothes I no longer wear. Organizations like the Salvation Army and the GoodWill Store are always looking for donations, so why not go through your closet and donate!
