This time of year is brimming with anticipation. As a kid, I remember the anticipation of Christmas was almost as much fun as opening the presents. I would sit next to the tree, look at the oddly shaped packages, and let my mind wander. When I was really, really, young, I always knew in the back of my mind that Santa couldn’t really exist. Nevertheless, I believed in him longer than all of my friends… I wanted to believe in the magic.
The same goes for relationships (Cherri). With a few extreme exceptions, I find the anticipation of starting something new to be one of my favorite parts of a relationship. Reading into a smile, fighting back nervousness, and if you’re really lucky… getting weak in the knees.
A potential relationship is like that tiny package under the tree that you’ve found when you thought you had opened everything. Having caught you completely by surprise, the unassumingly wrapped gift has all the potential in the world. As you pull the bow, your mind wanders… aware of the impending greatness or disappointment it may contain. Sometimes the box contains just what you need: a beautiful watch or some new earphones for your iPod. Other times the box contains nothing but disappointment: a box of droopy-eyed kitten “thank you!” cards from your crazy cousin Carl “I know you’ll need ‘em!” Sometimes, in rare occasions the box contains something amazing: as you peel the paper from the package, you catch a glimpse of that light Tiffany’s blue: something breathtaking. As we move closer to the holidays, make sure you enjoy the anticipation of it all. Cling to that side of you that believes in magic (if you don't have one, now’s the time to get it!)... Better yet, why not be the one to take someone's breath away this year?
