If the end of the year is like the finish line, this week is "the wall." The wall exists for me in many arenas, but most notably (read: painfully) while running the last 50 meters of the 400 meter dash. In the 400, "the wall" is that moment where your entire body freezes; your legs feel like they weigh 200 pounds each, and you can barely lift your arms. If you've ever watched track and field on TV (which you should), you've seen someone hit the wall. You see them running smoothly, with wide open strides around the last turn of the track- when all of a sudden BAM! They look like Elaine dancing on that episode of Sienfeld.
With a week of much-needed vacation right around the corner, I find myself struggling to complete the nagging projects I have hanging over my head. I'm altogether too focused on the finish line. I'm exhausted, and Elaine-ing my way through things: trust me, its not pretty.
The thing that always got me through the wall (aside from the fact the finish line was in sight) were my friends in the crowd. Those people who, despite my struggle, cheered me forward and were there to receive me when I crossed the line.
This season as you fight your way through your version of "the wall," be sure to recognize your cheering section.
It's also a good opportunity to take the time to be there for someone else... Check your school, town or office's giving tree, or the link above for opportunities to brighten someone else's holidays. The act of altruistic giving just might be the thing to give you a second wind.
